Dr.
David Helms has been Pastor since
April of 1998 and has served on staff at First Baptist since June 12, 1983 when he was called as Minister of Education
& Youth. David and his wife, Carolyn, are the parents of Eric,
who is a student at Furman University.
David, a native of Charlotte, grew up in First Baptist Church,
Charlotte where he made his profession of faith and was baptized. He graduated
from South Mecklenburg High School before attending East Carolina University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in
Writing. During his sophomore year of college, David felt a call to the
ministry and after graduation entered Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. While at Southeastern, David met and married Carolyn Dalton. They both
received their degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (Carolyn, Master of Divinity/Religious
Education, 1982 and David the Master of Divinity, 1983). David received
his Doctor of Ministry degree at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey, in 1999.
David has a passion for helping
people grow in their faith and become faithful disciples of Christ. He is an avid tennis player and biker. He enjoys reading and relaxing with his family.
